Forum: texts Subject: obsolete formats

archive.org has many many ebooks that I'd like to read but almost all are in formats that aren't friendly to ereaders such as bebook! The currently used formats are mobi, epub, fb2, etc. and of course the sony and kindle formats but few of the ebooks in archive.org are suitable to use - pdf and djvu being image files makes them impossible to edit to make suitable for ebook readers, and the djvu 'txt' is almost impossible to edit into the correct format (I've tried in MS Word but there are numerous odd features that make my converter to fb2 not work). Proj. Gut. is making an effort to modernize with mobi, html, txt, and epub versions of most but I don't seen the same efforts being made by archive.org (except for those that come from Proj. Gut.! Why not???

Just wanted to let you know that we are working to make ePub versions of our books available. It's too early in the effort to provide a lot of details, or a projected date, but we do recognize the importance of providing formats more well-suited to portable eBook devices.

Mr. Bromley,
Thanks for the information. I apologize for coming on so strongly about the format problem because I realize that archive.org provides great services with insufficient funds and personnel. Please keep up the good work of archiving texts, movies, etc. and I'm sure that many ebook readers will greatly appreciate the presence of the epub format!
Bob

No offense taken whatsoever. You're quite right about the importance of eBook-compatible formats, and I wanted only to let you know that we agree and plan to do something about it.
